Have him try reducing sodium intake, eating more fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts, lean proteins, fish, and foods rich in magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Use olive oil or canola oil when cooking.

Avoid, processed junk, foods high in fat, sugary soda, and cut back on sodium intake. He’ll really need to read labels for sodium content.

Exercise is also a great idea.

It’s not what food he should be eating. It’s what medication he should be taking. And that’s his blood pressure medicine. If there were a food that could lower blood pressure, there would be no need for people to take blood pressure medicine, and millions do…because there is no food that really lowers blood pressure enough on it’s own without medication. The best thing you can do for him is make sure he takes his blood pressure medicine absolutely every day, even when he feels good. He still has to take it so his blood level of medication stays therapeutic.

Fish oil capsules,I take them.I take one a day plus a blood pressure pill. The pill alone did not bring it down to what the Dr. wanted but with the fish oil it did.

I have high blood pressure myself. Stroke is not the only thing to worry about with high blood pressure, there are other issues as well; heart, kidneys, etc.

It’s very important to avoid salt. Don’t have a salt shaker at the table. Don’t add salt in cooking. Don’t purchase or eat foods that are packaged, pre-prepared, processed, cured, canned, pickled, or frozen. They are all VERY high in sodium, too high for someone with high blood pressure.

There are also seasoning blends that contain salt as well that he will have to avoid and condiments should be limited to small amounts (ketchup, mustard, etc.).

Your father needs to eat fresh food, prepared at home, without salt. He will have to learn to use seasonings without salt like Mrs. Dash, curry powder, etc. for flavour. Your father should also make sure he drinks plenty of water, at least 2 litres per day or more.

Caffeine also raises blood pressure so if he’s a coffee drinker he needs to cut back. I’m down to about 1/2 a cup a day though that’s a little extreme. 1 cup or maybe 2 on occasion is plenty. He should stop drinking any sodas/pops with caffeine such as Coke, Pepsi, etc.

Controlling blood pressure with medication alone is not enough. He must also cut way back on salt, eat a healthy diet, and get adequate exercise. A brisk walk every evening would do him a world of good.

Its not so much what he should be eating as its what he shouldn’t. No salt, not much red meat, avoid fried foods. Onions are good for the heart, vegetables and fruits. Avoid lots of sugar. Its a healthy diet.

    two things you can do:
google for a list of potassium rich foods. potassium helps remove salt and excess water thereby lowering blood pressure.

second, get and read NO More Heart Disease, by Louis Ignarro. He has won a Nobel Prize in medicine for his work in the area of curing, yes curing, heart disease. I use his formula, and I stopped needing blood pressure meds at all.
