Some people are born with genetic predispositions to certain illness, others get sick from contagious diseases that can trigger chronic illnesses and for others it is their lifestyle contributing to it. But you left out medical malpractice and side-effects of some medications that cause people to be treated for one symptom after another until they can fill a shoebox with their prescription meds. that the physicians have prescribed.

Lifestyle is the cause in most cases. You do not have to be overweight and out of shape. Eat right and get some exercise. I have a sister with Downs Syndrome and that is not her fault.

my best friend was 112 pounds,5.7 tall,a lifelong health food fanatic who worked out regularly at a gymn.one sunny day last summer, she dropped dead of a sudden, unexpected and massive coronary, age 49.are u going to tell me she did it to herself?i know a man in gr8 health in his mid-80′s.he has smoked since he was 14.by ur reasoning, she should be alive,he should be long dead.who knows, really?do what u can to help urself, but sometimes life-and death-take very unexpected turns.ask not for whom the bell tolls, even if u run 3 miles a day and live on tofu.it still might toll for thee……

Lifestyle can be the cause of a lot of health problems. There are a lot of natural remedies that can help various diseases along with a better diet and exercise. People who dont have insurance should be aware of what they can do to keep themselves healthier.
Insurance never causes a disease but it may make treating it more complicated.

why should they blame anything. They should own up. That is more responsible.

each case has to be judged on its own merits.

It’s lifestyle. Not having insurance is just another excuse. I’ve always had Health Insurance and I still wasn’t excempt.

Blame is a waste of time, you fall break your leg, you can talk all day on how you should have been more careful, used a railing, etc. the leg is still broken so it has to be fixed. Just do your best to improve yourself you can’t do anything about your insurance. As long as the care of a human being is for profit, its always going to be chaos.

No they shouldn’t play the Blame Game to me it goes to being responsible for our own actions & decisions I am a petite woman 5ft 1in & I’ve always been aware of my weight because of my stature if I put on 20lbs & can’t get around the right way who should I blame Me of course but I choose not to put on the weight so I can get around

Ha! Yesterday I just saw an obese person in an electric wheelchair at a Wendy’s order the double cheese burger with bacon and get the large combo fries, along with their ice cream desert. I’m sure they blame their condition on a thyroid and fast food places.

You make a good point, some or maybe even most of our medical problems are caused by bad lifestyles. But some are genetic, or chance, and there’s nothing we can do about them. And some are caused by poor health maintenance, i.e. lack of preventive care, and -those- are at least partly the fault of insurance companies. Insurance companies have no incentive to provide preventive care. A single-payer plan would, because it would save money in the long run.

Also a surprising amount of health care costs come from lack of prenatal care for pregnancies. In every other developed country, a cetain level of prenatal car is considered a right of citizenship. They have much lower infant mortality, fewer premature births, fewer complications in childbirth, etc.

Many people contribute to their health problems by not following a healthy diet and exercise regimine. I don’t see how their insurance is to blame, again, we should take responsibility for our own lives. True there are health issues that may be predestined. Moderation in all things is a good way to live. It is difficult when you see people eating foods that you long for or that the media puts out there to tempt you with. You just have to do the best you can, and that means staying true to ones self. We are in control much of the time as to what we do to these bodies of ours, but there are the exceptions to the rule where we have no control as to what we contract as far as illness’ or conditions out of the blue such as MS or MD, etc., even cancers that we know know of no known cause but possibly genetics.

I think educating the public can really work. At least it did for me. When I saw what cigarette smoking could do to your lungs and looks, I decided not to touch the stuff. Same with alcohol (as I’d seen what that stuff does to people who overindulge). The child I read with in 3rd grade now knows that McDonald’s fast foods are not good for you. I was so proud of him. So in answer to your question, yes, if a person who has control over what they put in their bodies did not heed the warnings and fall chronically ill, they should blame only themselves and their lifestyle and not the insurance companies.
