I’m tired of feeling weak, sick, and malnourished. I’m tired of being limited in what I can eat too. Vegetarian foods are not cheaper as I thought they were.
Hard to be a vegetarian having a food budget of only 2 dollars a day. Our government is evil for forcing disabled people like me to live on so little.
I thought buying more vegetarian foods would be cheaper and healthier but I was wrong. I cannot find anything any more that does not have some kind of junk in it. I know you will all tell me to go raw and organic but thats near impossible with only 2 dollars a day and no transportation.
I can buy caned vegetables as they are the cheapest but those cans are loaded with sodium. That is not helping lower my blood pressure. Rice I can make go pretty far and rice is pretty healthy, but a person can only eat so much rice. Its tuff, very tuff.
Food banks here are bad and I never goto them anymore. The foods they have are old, moldy, junk foods, stuff that don’t go far, etc. I refuse to go to food banks anymore!
I am very, very frustrated. I have no options and do not know what to do. I know many will come on here and judge me. Its wrong and definitely not helpful at all.
I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Does that really matter though?
Eggs are fine, but my blood pressure cannot take all the bad cholesterol and saturated fat in eggs.

I’ve been to 25 different stores. No bocca crumbles here.

Learn how to cook properly, preparing your own food is cheaper.
Of course those "veg foods" are more expensive, and they’re not that great for you, Amy’s and Boca and whatnot are great once in a while, but they’re not meant to become a staple.
Meat will always be more expensive than any sort of dried beans, tvp, tofu, vegetables or fruits (besides exotic/out-of-season) you buy for your meals. Always.
By the way, though the sodium in your canned veggies is not so great for your BP, neither is all the saturated fat/cholesterol/excess protein in the meat you’re considering buying. And if you want you can just wash the canned veggies before you prepare them or buy frozen ones that have no salt added.
You really need to take a good look at your diet. Meat isn’t the instant solution to your nutrition problems.
I don’t know for the US, but I have lived for a couple of months on the equivalent of £1 a day.
I bought most of my food in markets. If you go near the end of the day, the traders will rather sell produce cheap than have to cart it all away again, especially if you buy in bulk.
Do not buy any ready made food. Make your own.
I bought lots of veggies, especially the lumpy misshapen things. Put a large pan of onions, leeks, carrot, swede, turnip, cauliflower stalks etc. on the stove, add some water and boil slowly for an hour and a half or so. This, combined with dried pulses such as kidney beans or lentils (when re hydrated and boiled) should be the basis for most meals. You can divide the mix up and freeze quantities of it. A portion of this can be added to curry powder for a curry, added to stock for a soup, added to chilli powder for a chilli.
Also end of date cheap bread is good when made into croûtons for soup or frozen on the day you buy it.
The pulses should provide enough protein and energy for your needs (which you are probably missing out on and so feeling tired).
Edit: sorry didn’t notice the no transport bit. I think you’ll have to beg, borrow or steal a lift. The secret is buying in bulk and when the time is right. There’s no other way to do it, I’m afraid.
Human beings (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) are predators. We NEED to eat meat. Going against your genetic makeup is never a good idea, no matter what it is you are doing.
Eggs, beans, brown rice, potatoes, and oatmeal are inexpensive, nutritious foods. Beans are really cheap if you buy them dry and soak and cook them yourself. I’m not judging you. Why would I do that?
Eggs are good; the saturated fat is not bad for you. Read "How to Live Long and Feel Better" by Linus Pauling, and "Know Your Fats" by Mary Enig, Ph.D.
if you’re doing it to have a healthier diet than you should immediately go back to eating regular meats. You need that for protein, calcium, iron, etc. Regardless of what people think, being vegetarian is not all too healthy because you end up lacking a lot of important nutrients in your diet. I used to have a friend who grew up as a vegetarian because of her mom’s beliefs and her doctor told her she wasn’t getting enough nutrition in her diet and she wasn’t developing correctly, she was 15 and still didn’t have her period.
Yes, eat meat in moderation and your still part of the solution, it is people who eat to much meat that damage there health and contribute to animal suffering, I could never be a vegetarian but I try to moderate my meat eating.
People should only be vegetarian if they have the resources. I’m not sure what your situation is, but if you’re having such a hard time, and a veggie diet leaves you feeling sick, then go off it. At least until you can manage one. I was a vegetarian for three years and never felt sick or malnourished. I think our bodies tell us what we need. Maybe you’re just different (or of course, it’s the situation). It may be a moral thing, that you don’t want to eat animals, but do it for yourself. Of course, health wise, you’ll want to stick to white meats. And… with so little money, eating ANYTHING healthy is difficult.
I’m not sure if this a stupid suggestion, but: can you find a farmer’s market? You said you were disabled, I’m not sure how so, but perhaps you could find a small family-owned farm and befriend them. Maybe you can offer to do small things in exchange for fresh produce? Small things like, man their vegetable stand if they have one. I know if I owned a farm and someone like you needed fresh fruits and vegetables, I would try very hard to help.
Anyway, I hope you find out what you need. Don’t feel guilty for eating meat to take care of yourself. Yes, some people may think it’s wrong to eat animals, but when it comes to feeling so sick, your body is telling you something. Listen to it.
If you only have two dollars for food a day I don’t see how you could eat regular food. Eating vegetarian is good for you. If you are weak you might just have a medical problem. I am vegan and feel a lot healthier! You should buy in bulk like at a Sam’s or Costco. You could buy at a local farmer co-op or just in bulk at a store. It’s best to avoid packaged food. You should buy things you can use for lots of stuff like soy crumbles, potatoes, fat-free re-fried beans(others have lard), apples and other foods. You should make sure you get a variety of food. Maybe you’re eating too much rice. You should get fruit, brown rice, wheat breads, proteins and veggies. You should also try natural peanut butter, almond butter and hummus.
If your not happy of what your doing then stop it. But if you eat meat again make it sure that you only eat the right amount that you need.
Why?
In which country you are?
You have to learn how to cook your liking dishes.
It is easy to ckko and enjoy many meals.
Two dollars a day to feed yourself? Stop being picky and get to the food bank.
Ok, I know "picky" is the wrong word for vegetarianism. But it is a lifestyle that requires dedication and some access. You don’t have the means for that right now.
Find a soup kitchen or some trusted friend to help you out sometimes. And spend your money on food that can give you iron and vitamins.
Edit: You seem to be someone who asks for advice, and puts down every single answer. I don’t know your situation, but you need to help us help you. Do you have any friends or family anywhere around?
Yes.
