How can I help hubby change his diet and lose weight?

My husband is sick right now. He has a stomach ulcer and was throwing up blood last night. Now he is just throwing up, with no blood. He is 25, 6’1" and 250 lbs. He works nights and helps people out with whatever computer problems they have on the side. He gets maybe 4 hours sleep each day before having to go to work again. He gets little downtime, and doesn’t eat properly. He also has high blood pressure.

I’m 22 and my mom has been bugging me to make him change his diet and to take better care of himself.

What types of foods should he be eating to achieve a healthier weight and to lower his blood pressure? Also what else could he do to lose weight? Helpful answers only please!!

I am not sure if this is the kind of thing that you are looking for but this is what has helped me. It has diet plans, etc. It’s a website. This is 100% free. You put in how much you are trying to lose, and by when and it will tell you how many calories you would have to eat per day. It will give you a workout routine if you want one and if you don’t it will tell you how many calories you would have to eat without exercise and still lose the weight. Plus it offers meal plans too. This is a website that has helped me to lose weight (34 lbs. since Jan. 08). I could have actually lost more but I have been slacking a lot.It allows you to create a blog, keep track of what you’ve eaten, and your fitness. Along with some other things. It is kind of set up like myspace if you are familiar with that, but it is only for weight loss. It is http://www.SparkPeople.com, and if you decide to do it you can tell them I sent you or stop by my page, my name there is Tryin2Lose2.

make sure he eats plenty of fruit n veg so he’s going to the toilet regularly to get rid of the toxins n fats in his body. He needs to drink plenty of water..he really needs more sleep than he’s getting maybe you could figure something better out with his sleeping…it’s not good for his heart..my husband is the same he works shift work and doesn’t get much sleep..its hard to get him to change his unhealthy ways!..try and give him smaller portions..i think sometimes we take that they’re men with big appetites too far..just no take away fresh food and some exercise..maybe walk the dog and somehow more sleep..good luck
P.S It’s nice of him to help those other people on the side but he really needs to concentrate on himself for a little while.
oh yea and you can buy the margarine that lowers cholesterol "proactive" and pretty much anything with omega 3′s like fish, avocado but watch the amounts.

Ask him to get more sleep first of all. 7 hours hours of sleep is required for humans to function properly. If he is having high BP, then ask him to reduce the salt content in his diet. Top salt or table salt is a strict no no. Give him carb food when he goes to office. Like bread(brown) and butter, chicken. And protien food when he comes back, like grilled chicken, protien drink, etc. I would suggest protien suppliments like protienx, which can be dissolved in milk. Indian diet is the most suitable diet. If you can cook Indian food, then it is best. Like chappati/roti with cooked vegetables., and a small bowl of rice with dal.

    Easiest diet:

    Grilled not Fried.
More water, no sodas (not even diet sodas).
    No fattening dressings or cheeses.
No desserts (nothing healthy about them).
Skim milk (only takes a week to get used to taste change, and its cheaper)

    Good Meals:
    Brown Rice and Grilled chicken
Lean beef burger(93% meat 7% fat) on wheat bun
Fresh fruit with fat free vanilla yogurt

    Reccomend:
    MINIMUM 6 hours of sleep
30 mins of exercise 4 times a week (and then bump up to more exercise)

Is your hubby stubborn? :) If so, you can make all the suggestions you want but I’ve found the best way to help people take better care of themselves is to lead by example. Are YOU getting at least 7 hours of sleep? Are you eating good, nourishing meals? Are you active enough? If not, if you start healthy habits he will most likely follow because alot of people will get defensive and think you’re trying to change them if you start preaching to them about being healthy. So I suggest you just lead by example and he will probably see the difference in you and want to adapt a healthy lifestyle and you can be there for him when he asks for your help.

he sounds like my dad. my dad used to be really fit, then he started working all hours of the day and night (he works with computers as well) and eats to stay awake or just out of boredom. you need to nip this thing in the bud.

Believe it or not, Honey Nut Cheerios really do help lower cholesterol (you didn’t put that as one of his problems, but i bet he has high cholesterol from his weight). just a bowl a day does wonders.

he should consider cutting out animal products. whenever people have high blood pressure and are having health problems, doctors usually recommend a vegetarian and even a vegan diet. i did it and only exercised an hour a day (walking on the treadmill, not like heavy cardio or anything) and i lost 60 pounds in 4 months. if he does want to go vegetarian, talk with your doctor because you’ll need to know what he needs to supplement into his diet since he won’t be eating meat.

eating foods with low fat content is great. if it has more than 30% calories from fat, don’t eat it. it’s a great rule to live by.

also, it would help if you exercised and even dieted with him. it helps if there’s someone there with you cheering you on!

First, make sure he doesn’t eat anything spicy. When you go to the grocery store, try to buy items with less fat..like 1% milk..and non-fat yogurt…there are always healthy substitutes..If he doesnt know its low-fat, he’ll eat it without even noticing..so dont tell him. If possible, give him small portions…6 small meals a day…ask him not to eat anyting outside..give him food so he takes it to work..for blood pressure, just try to avoid salty foods, and he will be fine.

Try taking som ehealthy cooking classes! He will eat a lot better if you cook him delicious food that’s healthy.
Stir-fry’s, homemade soups, fish and vegetables are all good choices.
Act as though he’s diabetic, pick up some diabetic cookbooks. Thats what I use.
