food items and recipe's for low sodium?

My doctor says I have high blood pressure and I need to use less salt. I hardly ever put salt on my food so I’m trying to cut out my salt in food products I buy and food I make.

Can anyone tell me how much salt your body is suppose to have each day and what food items are lower in sodium.

I’m just looking for some ideas :)

Thanks for your input, I should metion the doctor has me on a water pill which makes me drink like CRAZY!! (drinking right now lol)
yes I know about fast food, I’m trying my best its just very hard.

the doctor said the bottom number is important mine was 90 and the norm is 80 I think..

    Hello!
    My father has had high blood pressure problems for years. Om general, my family tries to use spices like Garlic or Mrs. Dash instead of salt, or just completely lowering the salt content. It you cook a lot, you might also want to make things like chicken broth out of water and leftover chicken in a crock pot instead of Boulion, which is extremely salty.
    Many processed foods also contain salt, so if you eat less of those (like make macaroni and cheese from scratch and not from the box) that should also help.

    The body needs at least half of its weight in ounces of water daily and for evey quart that you drink of that amount, you should have 1/4 tsp of sodium in your body. You can take that sodium in foods or you can take it all by itself, but don’t take the sodium unless you are continuously drinking that amount of water or it will raise your blood pressure and also give you water retention. If you drink that amount of water daily, and up to a gallon of water daily, you will not have any signs of water retention. It takes water to move water.

    As far as cooking, I never use salt in anything, except what I take with each of my quarts of water and I do that with a 1/4 tsp. at the time I finish the quart of water. I season my foods with spices of all kinds and use garlic in any form for a salt substitute since it has such a rich flavor. If you are buying prepackaged foods or eating out alot, that is where you are getting your sodium. That is all they like to put into stuff I think. Some prepackaged items have as much as 650mg’s per serving. There is no sensible reason to put that much salt into food. Start fixing most of your meals from scratch if you don’t already and you can better control your sodium intake. They taste better that way, anyway.

    Also, start walking at least an hour a day and that will also help lower your blood pressure.
